Cosmetic Procedures

UT Health Services has added cosmetic procedures to its list of services.

Have you ever glanced at the cover of a magazine and wondered, “What happened to her face?" There are some people in Hollywood who seem to have a procedure on a weekly basis, completely changing their look – and not always in a positive way. Due to these pictures, many people associate Botox and fillers (Juvederm, Restylane) with “frozen faces and duck lips.” Most of us can agree, that does not sound very attractive!

In 2013, there were more than six million Botox procedures performed in the United States, making it the No. 1 selling cosmetic procedure in America. For those considering this procedure, it may surprise you to know that Botox has a relatively short duration of effect, lasting approximately three to six months. How does it work? Botox will temporarily decrease or stop the facial muscles from contracting. If the underlying facial muscles are not contracting, the overlying facial skin cannot wrinkle in response. As the medication gradually wears off, you will notice your muscles gaining strength and your skin will begin wrinkling in response to the muscle contraction. This will let you know it is time for another procedure, if you wish to continue with the treatments. When injected properly, Botox can give you a very natural appearance and help reduce the wrinkling of your skin as well as prevent further wrinkling.

Botox vs. dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are the second most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. Over three million procedures were performed last year. Dermal fillers are commonly used to provide volume in areas such as: cheek bones, nasolabial folds, and lips, which tend to sag as we age. Like Botox, dermal fillers are also temporary, but can provide a longer-lasting effect for six to 12 months, depending on the type of filler.

Finding a provider

With over nine million Botox and dermal filler procedures being performed in the United States annually, there are obviously many satisfied customers! How can you avoid a bad outcome? Find an experienced provider who is willing to listen to your concerns and not just “sell a procedure.” Make sure your provider answers all of your questions and does not seem rushed during the consultation. Most people love a good deal, but sometimes you can get what you pay for! Remember, this is your face and you should choose a provider or practice based on their reputation, not price. If you choose to get any type of procedure, you should follow the after-care instructions explicitly to decrease the likelihood of complications.

Cosmetic procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers are non-invasive and can be done in an office setting. They require no down-time and the procedure can take as little as 15 minutes! These procedures offer a temporary effect for those of us who would like to look several years younger without requiring a surgical procedure.
